Experience: The Efficiency of
Mass e-Mailing

Do you receive countless offerings for new pills and drugs?
Today every e-mail user needs to separate between real important information and spam; either using (better) sophisticated spam-filters or (worse) manual work. The increase of the spam mails reduces the value of the medium as an efficient communication channel.
The wide use of spam mails is, however, also the argument that e-mails is in general very efficient.
As we show in our following example, e-mail is still one of the best options to inform a large group of persons directly.
In one conference, we have had the problem that there have not been enough

volunteer reviewers around for all the submitted contributions.
With a broadcast of personalized e-mails to the community of this specific academic field, the target group of potential reviewers was asked for additional volunteers.
After 24 hours, more than 200 volunteer reviewers have been found for the additional work. In a very short time the new reviewers have been assigned to the remaining papers and the review process was running again.
If you imagine how much time such process would have needed with postal mail or phone calls, you would have probably to postpone the conference.
Correctly personalized non-spam mass-e-mails are very efficient for the communication with involved and defined groups of persons.
